Traits of British White Cattle

Comments from Walter

We are charter members of the British White Cattle Association, joined in January 1988. We have been active in all Association activities.  I served as the BWCAA President for two years and was elected secretary in November 1998 and served as Secretary until March of 2009.  I am still a member of the board of directors.

We have built one of the largest herds of Registered Purebred British White Cattle in the USA.  We follow a very strict culling program but register all animals that we feel have the quality to improve our herd or sell as seed stock to a new or established British White Breeder. As in all herds, some of our animals do not possess the qualities we think they should have to be eligible for registration, however we record all of their numbers right along with those we register. This gives us a guideline to judge the quality of our best animals. We record the birth, 205 and yearling weights on most animals born in our herd. We also weigh the dams when we wean their calves, a cow must be efficient to remain in our herd.  We grass finish some of our steers for direct marketing to our customers (see our website at www.gourmentgrassfedbeef.com ).

We have been active participants in all National British White sponsored events, including hosting three British White National Shows. We have shown cattle in all of the National British White Shows. Our children, Diane and Scott, were junior members of the BWCAA and have also participated in the National Shows and other events. Nancy was the Junior BWCAA leader for several years.

Nancy and I have been full time farmers and ranchers for many years. However, right after college we both first sampled non-farm life in the outside World. For me it was a short tour of active duty in the National Guard and then one year of teaching Vocational Agriculture. For Nancy it was five years teaching Home Economics and one year working in the electronics industry. In addition to our Registered British White Cattle we farm mostly irrigated land where our main crops are corn and soy beans.

I am a member of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association; have served as President of the local Cattlemen’s Association and am currently serving as its' Secretary-Treasurer.

Nancy and I extend a personal invitation for you to come by for a visit, especially during our open house weekend.
