We
here at Bohaty's British Whites would like to thank everyone who came to our
August 4th Family Fun Day. Even
though it was a rather warm and humid day (typical Nebraska weather for August),
the turn out was great with about 50 people present.
Our guests came from Utah, North Carolina, Nevada, Texas, Minnesota,
Iowa, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, as well as Nebraska.
Starting
at 9 AM, several people tried leading some British White heifers while listening
to some tips to help them prepare their own British White animals for showing.
We'd like to extend a special thanks to Christina Breth for letting us in
on some of her techniques for working with British Whites.
At halters are Christina and Jaden.
Local
Veterinarian, Wendall Bohmont, demonstrated how the use of a sonogram machine
can detect early pregnancy in our cows and even sex the embryo by about 60 days.
Fascinated guests gathered around one of the 2 monitors to see the
developing embryos and even see the tiny heart beat.
Taking
a hay rack ride in mid morning isn't very romantic but does make an effective
method to take a lot of people out to tour a pasture full of British White cows
and their calves. The cows even
cooperated by coming up to see who had come to visit.

After
taking time for a pizza break, Gearld Fry, a bovine engineering consultant, gave
an excellent presentation explaining how to select breeding stock using
knowledgeable observations and precise measurements. We heard many favorable comments from our guests and we all
learned a lot more about seed stock selection.
On
a lighter note, Jean Heidker, from Elko County Nevada, the cowboy poetry capital
of the world, recited some poems she wrote about her own British White cattle.
Not only is she good at humorous poetry but Jean also has a Ph.D. in
Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology. She
does new product development and ration formulations mainly with domestic
livestock; however, she has also developed the only successful nursing formula
for an orphaned baby whale. Being a
work alcoholic, Jean and her sons are also starting a cattle transporting
business and have offered a discount to British White breeders.
Meeting
and visiting with other like minded people is always enjoyable, and we observed
that British White Enthusiast particularly enjoyed getting to know each other.
The kids really enjoyed the water gun fight and the races, where they
each received a water gun and other small prizes.
They also made homemade ice cream (the old-fashioned hand crank variety),
which they promptly ate, all by themselves.
The kids were all awarded a British White T-shirt or cap for their
attendance.
After
a supper of grilled British White hamburgers with all the trimmings, the Good Ol'
Gospel Singers entertained us. This
group is all local talent that formed just for the love of singing.
They preformed a variety of 50's songs as well as some old time gospel
songs. We heard from the crowd many
comments about the group, one in particular really liked the way they did
